WHEN DID IT START?
Technically speaking, I started mid-November 2009.
HOW LONG IS IT GOING ON UNTIL?
I said December 2010, but I’m thinking if I make it to the 1st of December, it’s good enough.
I’d like to end 2010 without purchasing a single wardrobe item however.
HOW DID IT START?
I had gone through a particularly frustrating experience.
It was one of the first days of November and I purchased a pair of low kitten heeled shoes, forgetting to ask about their refund/return policy.
I got home, and realized the right leg was wobbly (the heel was slightly off center).
I wanted to return them, couldn’t without only getting a store credit, and decided to keep them.
It was only $40~, but I got really annoyed at myself for buying on impulse.
That’s when I decided to challenge myself.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
No clothing.
No shoes.
No jewelery.
No accessories.
Nothing that can be considered part of my “wardrobe”, as in what I would wear out in public.
Underwear for example, is in the grey area, because it’s kind of essential.
But luckily, I have tons of underwear, and therefore will not need to purchase any.
ANY OTHER EXCEPTIONS?
I do have 3 items that are on my exception list:
A Fabulous Trench Coat
A Leather Jacket
A Pair of Knee-High Grey Flat Boots
If I can find these items for under $200, in fabulous quality, fit and colour, I am allowing myself to buy them.
Or maybe I’ll let myself buy them every 4 months.
Kind of like a milestone treat.
WHY ARE YOU PUNISHING CHALLENGING YOURSELF?
At first it was something I uttered out of sheer frustration.
Then I thought about it some more.
And some more.
And I thought that it’d actually be an interesting challenge to have a year without shopping.
It is really where I am weakest on, because I think — “What’s another $5″?
When in fact, I don’t need that $5 shirt, as I already own 10.
It’s not about the money. It’s a personal challenge. Like those crazy ass triathlon-ers.
I MEAN REALLY….
How many clothes does a girl really need?
I think I might have enough to go a MONTH without doing laundry.
No joke.
IT IS ALSO GOING TO FORCE MY CREATIVITY OUT
I’ve already gotten lots of ideas about how to layer and pair different things in my wardrobe.
Shopping my own closet, and coming up with new combinations is actually kind of cool.
Then you pair it with all the jewelery options I have, and it’s just fun.
So that’s it!
Thanks for coming along for the ride
